Band:
Belleville
Title:
The First Dance
Format:
EP (5 Tracks)
BY RICHARD BATCHELOR
Belleville are a 5 piece from Canterbury of whom I had heard news of before, so I was looking forward to hearing their sound. Great things have been said about lead singer Emily Yates’ voice, but I had to have patience as instrumental title track ‘The First Dance’ started off the EP, delightfully coming across as a mix of Coldplay and U2… a sound that continues across the EP.
My favourite songs on the EP were ‘Made Of Glass’ and ‘Serenade’ as Emily Yates’ intelligent and heartfelt lyrics are delivered with a wonderfully warm voice of which I had heard so much about. I thought the electric violin was an excellent addition and the megaphone sound on ‘Waves’ points to more experimental production in the future.
Overall this is uplifting and impressive stuff from the Canterbury Quintet..
